Manitoba: various locations
Saturday, September 22:
The NDTV delegation arrived in Winnipeg on September 22, 2012.
The group comprised
Chef Vicky Ratnani
Asavari Capoor
Mirza Fahad Beg
Zahid Waheed
Raju Banda
After some brief stops to prepare for their time in Manitoba (namely to purchase some warmer clothing items for Chef Vicky), the group headed to the St. Norbert Farmers' Market.
Various vendors were interviewed and several segments were shot, highlighting the diversity of the goods available at Manitoba's largest farmers' market.
Sunday, September 23, 2012:
The morning began with a shoot of the Winnipeg skyline from the Forks market area and an opening sequence filmed with Chef Vicky on the river bank with the Provencher Bridge in the background.
The crew then travelled to Selkirk, Manitoba to capture a cooking segment with Chef Mary Jane Feeke of Benjamin's Restaurant. Chef MJ prepared a gluten-free pizza featuring Manitoba pea flour as an ingredient, in her wood-fired oven. The pizza included a unique mix of toppings using BC pears and a variety of Manitoba sourced ingredients:
- Manitoba tomato sauce (prepared fresh by Chef MJ)
- Manitoba cremini mushrooms
- Manitoba onions: caramelized to bring out their sweetness
- Manitoba-made cheese
- Manitoba-grown baby arugula
Following the pizza cooking segment with Chef MJ, the crew spent time filming various locations within Selkirk before departing to Steinbach. The crew stayed at the Calder House Bed and Breakfast and the Country Whitehouse Bed and Breakfast for both Sunday and Monday nights. Here too, the crew took several shots of the Manitoba countryside including railway tracks and open fields.
Monday, September 24:
The morning was spent at Stonelane Orchard located in Steinbach, where the crew filmed Chef Vicky along with owner Kim Shukla, in the field. Chef Vicky was able to procure fresh produce for his next cooking segment.
The afternoon segment focused on the hemp industry in Manitoba. Anndrea Hermann joined us in a hemp test plot, just outside of Kleefeld.
Tuesday, September 25:
Chef Vicky and the crew were excited to visit Renaissance Bison Farm in Steinbach where Alain Nadeau accompanied the group into the bison enclosure.
The remainder of the day was spent filming Chef Vicky's cooking segment at the Calder House Bed and Breakfast. He used a variety of Manitoba products including Nature's Farm pasta, Stonelane Orchard produce (tomatoes, kale, peppers), locally caught Walleye crusted in a layer of Manitoba hemp hearts to produce his finished dish.
Chef Vicky and the NDTV experienced an authentic Indian dinner at the Clay Oven restaurant in Winnipeg, hosted by Dr. Digvir Jayas and Mr. Romel Dhalla, on behalf of the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce.
